Health, not haste

Join our call to STOP the Police withdrawing from mental health callouts, until an alternative service is operating.

In mid-April, the Police will take the next step in scaling back their responses to mental health callouts.*

The problem is, the Government hasn't ensured an alternative service is ready to go.

This move risks a dangerous breakdown in care for the tens of thousands of New Zealanders who call 111 each year, and the health workers already struggling under the weight of demand.

Health, not haste, must guide this transition.

Sign our petition calling for the Police to halt their hasty withdrawal from mental health callouts.

*The Police will still attend mental health callouts where there is an immediate risk to safety or life.

"The Police are not the best agency to respond to mental health callouts, but there’s no one else to take their place... yet. Create a full mental health crisis service, THEN the Police can withdraw."

~ Shaun Robinson, Chief Executive, Mental Health Foundation

Staying safe

If you or someone you know has immediate safety concerns please still dial 111, or contact your local mental health crisis assessment team which you can find by clicking the button below.

Imagine trying to replace the engine of a car, while it is moving. Sounds dangerous, doesn't it? It would be much safer and more effective to slow down and wait until a new engine was ready. Our recommendation is to:

STOP the Police withdrawing from mental health callouts until an alternative service is up and running.

PLAN a detailed, alternative mental health crisis response that is appropriately funded, created in consultation with the people most affected.

ROLL out and test the new crisis response service, THEN, and ONLY THEN, can Police step away and get back to their core job of law and order.

Why is the MHF involved?

As Aotearoa New Zealand’s most established mental health charity, advocating for people experiencing mental health crises is core, and critical, work for us.

We tell our MPs and decision makers when they’re doing a good job, and we call them out when they can do better, as we’re doing with this campaign.
